Art on Essex

Honoring history and progress through public art.

Hear from Bo Tsang DiMatteo about the concept behind “Celestial”, Art on Essex.

Celestial: of or relating to the sky and stars

Each of us are distinct and unique, but essentially we are all celestial beings who look at the same constellation of stars.

Bo Tsang DiMatteo, Designer

The project supports diversity in our community, engages multiple community partners, and employs our local artists. Our supplemental craft activity allows further creative engagement in our community and helps educate the community of the historical significance of 12-16 Essex Street.

Learning History Together

Local historian Jim Bennett collaborated with local artist Bo Tsang DiMatteo and Chinese Art Administrator Ziyuan Yang to extract creative design based on the historical significance of the 12-16 Essex Street building.

Celestial  is a public art project that honors the history and contributions  of Melrose’s earliest Chinese immigrants to our community while also celebrating progress and growth in our city.

Melrose Together has partnered with local historian Jim Bennett to document the historic stories surrounding Charlie Sing, Chinese Immigration to the United States, and the early Chinese laundry businesses in Melrose in the late 1890s.

A series of art panels by local Chinese American artist Bo Tsang DiMatteo will soon be  installed as a mural along the construction site of the 12-16 Essex development project to commemorate the history of Melrose’s first minority owned business - Charlie Sing’s Chinese laundry.

天体Celestial
